Christa Stephens

Her commitment to education and mentorship shines through her work with over 200 aspiring entrepreneurs, guiding them to launch successful ventures, reflecting her belief in the transformative power of knowledge. Christa’s expertise is recognized far beyond her agency’s success; a Wayne State University alum, she carries a degree in Geology and certifications in ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 that underscore her commitment to excellence in environmental management and quality control. A respected voice in the industry, she’s a regular on the speaking circuit, sharing insights that inspire innovation and action. Whether through her pro-bono consulting at TechTown or facilitating courses at BUILD Institute, Christa’s influence extends across Detroit’s entrepreneurial landscape, making her a beacon for those looking to navigate the complexities of digital marketing and design.

Damon Thompson
Damon E. Thompson, a lifelong Detroit resident, with a B.A. in Finance from Michigan State University has an extensive background in community development, housing, and entrepreneurship. Damon currently serves as Senior Director, National Housing with Local Initiatives Support Corporation. In 2012, Damon founded Thompson Business Services LLC, to assist churches with developing CDCs focused on neighborhood revitalization; his consulting services have expanded over the last thirteen years from executive coaching to business development to securing funding. Damon is a seasoned workshop facilitator with a passion for imparting knowledge back into others. Damon strives to remove barriers and obstacles that many entrepreneurs face along this journey of not only starting a business but making that business profitable and sustainable.

Evelyn Stokes
Evelyn Stokes, a seasoned entrepreneur and accomplished professional chef, brings a rich blend of academic excellence and hands-on business experience to her role as a Business Class Facilitator at Build Institute. With a BA in Political Science from the University of Michigan and an MBA with an emphasis in Finance and Statistics from the University of Phoenix, her educational background is both diverse and profound. Boasting over a decade of experience in culinary instruction, public speaking, and professional cooking, Evelyn has honed her skills in coaching, project management, and relationship building. Her comprehensive training and multifaceted experiences equip her to empower and inspire entrepreneurs and small businesses across the Detroit metro area, making her an invaluable asset to the Build Institute team.

Lawrielle West
Lawrielle West is passionate about DEI and providing resources, community and connection to entrepreneurs. As a multifaceted business owner that prides herself on creating a safe space for leaders to learn, scale, and grow; this is truly a perfect role for her as a creative entrepreneur and trailblazer. With a background in Social Work, community organizing, and entrepreneurship, Lawrielle West brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role. She has worked with a variety of organizations and initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion, which includes: Detroit Women’s Leadership Network, Black Leaders Detroit, American Association of People with Disabilities, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

Margo Dalal
Margo Dalal is a social justice advocate based in Detroit. She is the Associate Director of Capital Strategies at Seed Commons, a National Community Development Financial Institution that finances worker-owned and community-controlled businesses. Previously, she co-founded the Detroit Community Wealth Fund, where she has served as the founding Executive Director. She also founded the Detroit Kite Festival. Margo holds a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts from Hampshire College. She currently serves as Board Co-Chair of the New Economy Coalition and as a member of the Detroit Economic Justice Coalition. She lives in East English Village, where she tends to a large rain garden.

Nezaa Bandele
With over 30 years of experience in Detroit’s small business food network, Nezaa is a dedicated resource and mentor to many of the city’s food and business entrepreneurs. As the owner of Paradise Natural Foods, Nezaa offers plant-forward, seasonal menus, vegan pastries, and craft beverages, expressing her focus on community health and passion for fresh, natural ingredients. Throughout her career, Nezaa has supported countless small businesses in navigating Detroit’s food ecosystem, building resilience, and adapting to new challenges after the pandemic. This expertise is shaped by both entrepreneurship and corporate management roles with Starbucks and Magic Johnson Enterprises, enabling her to help small businesses implement scalable systems and refine their operations for growth. Nezaa studied Dietetics and Community Health Education at Wayne State University, is a certified food safety manager, and has certification and extensive experience in quantity food production. In recognition of her longstanding commitment to Detroit’s small business community, she was awarded ProsperUs Detroit’s inaugural Small Business Hero Award at their 10th-anniversary celebration.
