Detroit Delivers

Tell us about your business!

Karen Thornton: Detroit Delivers, LLC provides concierge level personal assistant and etiquette services to successful women and businesses in the city of Detroit. We ensure confidentiality while streamlining your lifestyle with services that alleviate the non-essentials all with the additional function of helping you polish your personal presentation. Our etiquette classes take place in Southfield and our Detroit office in the New Center area.

How did you become an entrepreneur?

KT: My passion for the city, women and organization are evident in my past experiences, which include a tenured history working for the US Federal Government and various other entrepreneurial ventures like Mary Kay. I am a certified children and business etiquette trainer. This business is my life after life with the US government.

“It was nice to work in a group where it was all love. People welcomed each other, consulted with each other, and blended well.”

What was your experience with Build?

KT: I came to Build through the first cohort of Motor City Match (MCM). I never thought about a business plan because I worked for the government. It was nice to work in a group where it was all love. People welcomed each other, consulted with each other, and blended well. My business started just after Build class ended and things are picking up. MCM provided money I didn’t have because I am a startup. If it weren’t for their technical assistance grant that I received, I wouldn’t have been able to design my website with Saga Marketing. I am very proud of how they renovated my website.

To the BUILD Institute Community,

On behalf of the BUILD Institute Board of Directors, we want to share that the Board has made the decision to pause operations at the end of 2025.

We recognize that we are living in a time of great uncertainty for small business support organizations across Michigan. This moment offers us an opportunity to reassess how BUILD delivers on its mission, retool our programming, and evaluate new partnership opportunities and our overall business model to ensure long-term sustainability and impact.

In the coming months, we will continue all scheduled programming through December to ensure that all commitments to entrepreneurs and partners are honored. During this time, we will also explore new ways to align our work with the evolving needs of our community, including our network of over 3,000 alums.

Please join us in showing appreciation for the team members and facilitators who have served Detroit’s entrepreneurs and supported BUILD’s mission since our founding in 2012.

If you have any questions about this decision or what it means in the near term, please email us at [email protected].

Thank you for your continued support and for being part of BUILD’s legacy of inclusive entrepreneurship.

With gratitude,
The BUILD Institute Board of Directors
